Our Team



Charles S. Whelan, Jr.
President
As President and Principal Consultant of The Whelan Group, Mr. Whelan serves as a management and financial advisor to a broad range of educational, cultural, and social service organizations. In the course of his work, Mr. Whelan has helped over one hundred fifty nonprofit organizations to shape a new or broader vision for their work, to strengthen their Boards, and to develop and implement creative strategies for growth. Mr. Whelan serves on the Board of several nonprofit organizations. He holds a Masters Degree in Urban Planning from Pratt Institute and a Bachelor’s Degree from the College of the Holy Cross.


Theresa A. Schieber, MBA
Vice President and Chief Operating Officer
Ms. Schieber brings to The Whelan Group a valuable blend of strategy, management, operations, and marketing skills. Her diverse professional background spans both the corporate and non-profit arenas, and includes running a multi-million dollar professional development training program for a major University in the Southeastern U.S., and managing administrative operations for the New Orleans division of an international corporation with over $1 billion in sales. In her capacity as VP & COO, Ms. Schieber oversees the firm’s operations, directs the implementation of the firm’s growth strategy, plays a lead role in new business development and serves as a team leader and mentor to the staff. Ms. Schieber also serves as a Senior Consultant to the firm’s clients. As a Senior Consultant she is responsible for strategic planning, organizational design, project management, financial planning and analysis, business development and fundraising for a diverse portfolio of clients, and has advised on and managed fundraising projects totaling over $350 million. Ms. Schieber currently serves as the Board President of the Tulane Alumni Association New York Chapter, and also volunteers her time at many nonprofit organizations. Ms. Schieber holds a MBA from Loyola University and a B.A. in History from Tulane University.


Charlotte G. Kea
Senior Consultant
Ms. Kea brings to the Whelan Group more than nineteen years of experience in business, policy development and program management in the government, corporate and civil society sectors.  Her career includes positions with the Library of Congress, NASA, the U.S. Department of Commerce, Iridium LLC, the International Youth Foundation and the Development Gateway Foundation. In her role as a fundraiser and consultant, she has raised more than $15 million in support from US and non-US corporate, foundation and public sector agencies.  As a Senior Consultant, she is responsible for project management, business development and fundraising as well as product and service development. Ms. Kea’s volunteer activities include serving as President of the Smith College Alumnae Association, and on the Boards of the Smith Board of Trustees, Operation Respect and the International Career Advancement Association.  She is a member of the Council on Foreign relations, the Junior League of Washington and is listed in Cambridge’s 2007 Who’s Who. She holds an MA in International Relations from the University of Denver and a BA from Smith College.  In addition, Ms. Kea speaks Danish, French, and Russian.


Melissa Litwin

Senior Consultant
Ms. Litwin brings over fifteen years of experience in museum and arts management to The Whelan Group and has a solid understanding of the unique challenges faced by the managers of nonprofits. Prior to joining TWG she was the CFO and Interim Director of a prestigious contemporary art space. She has managed capital campaigns, designed inaugural programming for new buildings, and developed and implemented strategic and business plans for both large and small institutions. Her nonprofit experience includes managing fundraising projects, developing and running education and public programs, and generating earned income. In addition to her significant experience in nonprofit management, Ms. Litwin worked for a Washington D.C consultancy with a practice dedicated to helping nonprofits with their earned income strategies. She is an active volunteer with the In2Books literacy program and with Artists Space, and is a member of AAM. Ms. Litwin holds a MBA with a double major in Strategic and Operations Management from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, a B.A. in English and a B.S. in Psychology, both from the University of Washington.


Elizabeth Eng
Associate Consultant
Since joining The Whelan Group, Ms. Eng has worked on a range of campaign planning and management projects in the areas of youth development, education, and the arts. Her work with the firm includes resource development business plans, prospect research and management, feasibility studies, and a variety of strategic initiatives for the firm. With her professional and academic background, she brings to TWG an excellent array of quantitative analysis, writing ability, and in-depth research management skills. Ms. Eng has corporate experience with a major pharmaceutical company, where she contributed to projects involving information security internal audits and colleague education initiatives. Ms. Eng holds a B.A. in Economics from Yale University.


Eric Klapper

Associate Consultant
Mr. Klapper brings to the firm an eclectic and experienced background that includes an extensive knowledge of not-for-profit fundraising management, campaign planning, and high-net worth donor sustainability strategies. As the Associate Director of Development at a New York City-based nonprofit that offers job-training to formerly incarcerated men and women, Mr. Klapper gained an intense understanding of board relations, annual fund campaign planning, and campaign management. Mr. Klapper has also served as a project-coordinator during the start-up phases of several New York based not-for-profits, developing their fundraising strategies, significantly expanding their constituent bases and increasing their funding. Mr. Klapper holds a B.A. in Sociology from St. Lawrence University.


Meng Li
Associate Consultant
Ms. Li comes to The Whelan Group with an array of nonprofit experience and solid background in financial and strategic planning.  As the Senior Program Assistant at Seedco, a community and economic development non-profit intermediary organization, Meng worked with the CEO and CFO, performing in-depth reviews of the company’s finances, conducting program performance analyses, and helping to develop their strategic financial plans. She was also involved with a project that used web-based technology to connect low-wage workers in New York, Tennessee and Georgia with a variety of social services benefits. Ms. Li holds a B.A. in Economics from Smith College.


Joshua Kent
Office and Accounting Manager
Mr. Kent brings to the firm a strong background in accounting, human resources and administration and has worked in both for-profit and nonprofit organizations such as ACE Programs for the Homeless where he served as the Director of Finance and Human Resources; the Buhl Foundation where he was the Assistant to the President; and ASW Services a supply chain and logistics company.  At The Whelan Group, Mr. Kent supports all aspects of accounting, financial management and business operations.


Erin Kade Greenbaum
Administrative Assistant to the Consulting Team
Ms. Greenbaum brings a unique blend of high-level professional, educational, and interpersonal skills to TWG. Supporting the Consulting Team with her suite of professional software, research, and project management skills, Ms. Greenbaum plays an integral role in specific client projects and internal initiatives. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in American Studies from Columbia University, as well as a Master’s Degree in Education and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Jewish Music from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.


Megan Lyles
Executive Assistant to the President
Ms. Lyles comes to TWG from a diversified professional background including administrative and legal assisting and office and project management in immigration law, commercial litigation and investment banking, as well as case management at nonprofits focused on services to at-risk youth and low-income seniors. She has published several personal and travel essays and continues to contribute her time to nonprofits on a volunteer basis. Ms. Lyles holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Work from New York University.
